University and Several Major Companies Across Debrecen Join Natiowide Energy-Saving Measures
In order to maintain the security of power supply in Hungary in the face of an exceptional heatwave and challenges to electricity generation, the University of Debrecen and major economic players in the city have introduced measures in line with the government’s initiative to reduce consumption.
University of Debrecen Shuts Down Decorative Lighting and Introduces Restrictions
In response to the exceptional heat and the resulting increase in energy consumption, the University of Debrecen has switched off the decorative lighting of its buildings and introduced restrictions on the use of air conditioning, the opening hours of certain teaching buildings, and the operation of its fountains.
Healthcare services at the university will continue to operate as normal. In the event of any disruption to the electricity supply, the university’s emergency response procedures will be implemented. The university’s facilities management team is continuously monitoring the situation and will take any necessary measures, while hoping that the external electricity supply will remain uninterrupted.
Solar System Ensures Daytime Operations at BMW Group Plant Debrecen
BMW Group Plant Debrecen has issued a statement supporting the country’s nationwide energy management efforts. The company has solar power system covering 53 hectares with an installed capacity of 45 MWp, which is capable of generating up to 250 MWh of electricity. As a result, under favourable weather conditions, the plant’s daytime operations can be powered almost entirely by renewable energy generated on site, the company said.
BMW also emphasised that, as a responsible corporate citizen, it is engaging in dialogue with its employees to encourage conscious and efficient energy use. “We believe that every single step counts in the current situation and that we can make a meaningful contribution together. Our goal is to actively support the stability of Hungary’s energy supply through responsible and efficient operations, while playing our part in addressing the current challenges,” the statement concludes.
EcoPro to Reduce Electricity Consumption by Nearly 20%
In line with its commitment to responsible corporate governance and sustainable operations, EcoPro BM Hungary is launching a voluntary energy-efficiency programme aimed at temporarily reducing electricity consumption while supporting the stability of Hungary’s energy system.
In place between 1 and 15 August, the measures are expected to achieve a 19.9% reduction in electricity consumption. The programme has been designed to ensure that employee safety is not affected and that the facility continues to operate in a predictable and responsible manner.
To achieve these savings, EcoPro BM Hungary will introduce several targeted measures:
- Postponing the energy-intensive testing of the AP oxygen and nitrogen production unit.
- Temporarily switching off six transformers connected to Production Lines 1 and 2 in the NCA building.
- Shutting down equipment that is not currently in use.
- Temporarily limiting operations in part of the LHM building.
- Increasing the air conditioning temperature setting in office areas from 24°C to 27°C.
- Making greater use of natural daylight to reduce electricity consumption for lighting.
CATL to Further Reduce Energy Consumption Despite Low Current Demand
Although CATL Debrecen’s battery cell plant has not yet commenced operations – meaning that the facility’s water and energy consumption remains low – the company’s specialists are actively preparing temporary measures to reduce the energy consumption of the module assembly plant, thereby helping to ensure the uninterrupted supply of electricity to households.
As an initial step, the company will focus on reducing energy use unrelated to production. Measures may include suspending temperature control in rooms that are unused or only minimally used, increasing temperature settings in logistics buildings to the upper permitted limit, rescheduling certain manufacturing processes, and optimising the performance of energy-intensive equipment.
Alföldi Printing House Reorganises Production
As a responsible company, Alföldi Nyomda Zrt. is reorganising its shift schedule to help reduce the load on Hungary’s electricity grid, moving its afternoon shift to the overnight period in order to reduce demand on the electricity network. The company expects to reduce its electricity consumption from the grid during peak demand periods by around 30%, equivalent to approximately 6 MW per day. Customer requirements are not affected, including the fulfilment of textbook printing commitments and the continued security of Hungary’s textbook supply.
