Bíbor Street to be Resurfaced and Equipped with Stormwater Drainage System

Another road development project has begun in Debrecen, this time on Bíbor Street. The number of residential properties in the area has increased significantly in recent years, resulting in heavier traffic on the road. As part of the project, the street will receive a new asphalt surface and a stormwater drainage system will also be installed.

Around 250 metres of of the street will receive a new asphalt surface as part of the project, with the road being widened to 5.5 metres. The street branches off Lóskúti Street, and the junction will be resurfaced over a further 33 metres. In addition, a stormwater drainage system will be installed along almost 280 metres. The works on Bíbor Street began with utility investigation works.

With the site handed over in July, the contractor has six months to complete the project, meaning the road is due to be completed by 10 January under the contract. However, according to the plans, the works could be finished as early as this year. “Although the contractual deadline runs until early January, the contractor is expected to do everything possible to complete the project by the end of November, weather permitting, so that we can reopen the road to traffic,” explained Zsombor Gábor, Head of City Operations.

Once completed, the road section will be designated as a residential traffic-calmed zone, meaning vehicles will be limited to a maximum speed of 20 kilometres per hour.

The HUF 64.8 million project is being funded by the local authority following an open public procurement procedure. “In recent years, we have launched an economic development programme that has enabled us to use local business tax revenues to fund projects such as this one,” highlighted Deputy Mayor Diána Széles.

Road construction is also currently under way on Csuka Street, alongside the works on Bíbor Street. Several billion forints have been earmarked in Debrecen’s budget this year for the construction of new roads.
