12 Floats Already in the Making for This Year’s Debrecen Flower Carnival

The Debrecen Flower Carnival will once again feature an evening parade, so the designers have also taken care to ensure that the floats will look spectacular after dark.

A polystyrene replica of one of the characters from the popular Disney film Inside Out is being coated with glue. Flower petals will then be applied to its surface. The creators use almost every part of the plants when making the compositions. Tens of thousands of fresh flowers will once again be used to decorate the floats this year. They will not be attached until 19 August, so that they remain fresh for as long as possible.

This year’s Flower Carnival will bring a well-known Hungarian folk song to life, while the four aces from a Hungarian playing-card deck and the houses of a fairytale world will highlight the importance of a healthy lifestyle. A total of 12 floats will travel through the streets, including the Holy Crown float and the opening float.

As flowers are the most important element of the carnival, the nationwide drought is also affecting the event. “Unfortunately, the range we can choose from is becoming increasingly limited, and that is one of the biggest problems we are facing at the moment. The drought has also severely affected flower production here in Hungary. Because we use large quantities of both dried and fresh flowers, the problem is particularly acute for us,” said Tamás Gulyás, a flower-float builder.

Although sourcing the flowers is proving difficult, the organisers promise that this year’s carnival will once again be spectacular. A community float will also take part in the event, with anyone able to attach a flower to it on 18 and 19 August at Dósa nádor Square. The dance performances are, of course, another essential part of the programme, and the various groups have been preparing for the event for months.
