Road Construction Continues in Debrecen with Upgrade to Bíbor Street and Part of Lóskúti Street

Bíbor Street will receive an asphalt surface along a 250-metre stretch, while, as a continuation of this section, a 33-metre asphalted stretch will also be constructed on Lóskúti Street in order to create safer conditions for traffic.

Carried out at the initiative of local residents, the works were presented at a press conference held on site on 26 August 2026 by Deputy Mayor Diána Széles, who is also the municipal representative for the district. As she explained, the unpaved road surface on Bíbor Street has so far been maintained by grading, but the city had promised local residents that, as soon as the opportunity arose, the municipally maintained Bíbor Street would be given an asphalt surface, as the street also serves as a collector road for the smaller side streets in the surrounding area, which were recently developed as private roads.

The project is being carried out with HUF 64.8 million in funding awarded under Phase II of the Competitive Districts Programme. In addition to providing Bíbor Street with a permanent road surface and constructing an appropriate stormwater drainage system, the programme will also fund the construction of a permanent road surface and an appropriate stormwater drainage system on the section of Fekete István Street in Pallag, Debrecen, between Bocz Ernő Street and Makszin Mihály Street, from the HUF 400,000,000 grant awarded.

It was announced at the press conference that the paved carriageway on Bíbor Street will be 5.5 metres wide, making it suitable for two-way traffic, with a kerb on one side. A stormwater drainage channel will also be constructed along a total length of nearly 280 metres, from Lóskúti Street to the Tócó outfall. The road construction is due to be completed by the beginning of January next year, but the contractor is doing everything possible to complete the work sooner, with completion expected by the end of November this year. Once the road construction has been completed, Bíbor Street will be designated as a residential and recreation zone.

At the same time as the road construction works, but independently of them, internet service providers are also currently carrying out network construction in the area as part of their own investments.

In addition to Bíbor Street, road construction is currently also under way on Csuka Street. Debrecen’s budget for this year allocates several billion forints to the construction of new roads.

Road construction is taking place in parts of Debrecen where residents have been waiting for improvements for a long time, as well as in areas where new residential neighbourhoods have recently been developed. This will continue to be the case in the future, as the municipality is committed to ensuring that the city’s residents can live in a comfortable residential environment, Deputy Mayor Diána Széles emphasised.
