Vojtina Puppet Theatre Prepares for New Season

Vojtina Puppet Theatre is preparing for the new season with five new productions and revivals of three earlier performances. The company’s aim remains to engage audiences of all ages: alongside a contemporary production aimed at secondary school pupils and adults, the repertoire will also feature a programme designed for babies as young as three months old.

Vojtina Puppet Theatre’s season-opening event began with a premiere where members of the company were also introduced to plans for the new season. The auditorium lighting was modernised over the summer, allowing the theatre to embark on its 51st season in a renewed setting. For one of the company’s longest-serving members, every new season presents a special challenge. “I am now beginning my 37th season at Vojtina, and I always experience this as an immense source of happiness. The theatre is constantly giving and receiving: we give something to the children, and they give something equally important back to us,” said puppeteer György Reschofsky.

Diversity will be at the heart of the new season. The company is preparing five new productions, while also reviving three earlier performances. They will pay tribute to the 100th anniversary of Winnie-the-Pooh with a production titled The Hundred-Acre Wood, while secondary school pupils and adults will be addressed through a contemporary adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. One of the most important new initiatives will be the baby theatre programme, which aims to introduce children to the world of theatre from a very young age. “Through our baby theatre project, we are seeking to explore how theatre can contribute to the development of children at the very beginning of their lives. We want to create a space where even the youngest children, from as early as three months old, can encounter art,” said Terka Láposi, director of Vojtina Puppet Theatre.

According to the muicipality, the puppet theatre is an important part of Debrecen’s cultural life, which is why the maintaining authority is also supporting the company by ensuring appropriate conditions for its work. “The renovation of the Kossuth Street performance venue is currently under way. Together with the Vojtina team, we are working to create the best possible working conditions for the company, while also developing a welcoming and friendly environment for the children, nurseries and schools of Debrecen,” Deputy Mayor István Puskás emphasised.

Vojtina will once again launch the new season with a family day this year: the event titled Idesüss a figurásra will welcome visitors from 10 am on Sunday at the Memorial Garden.
