Debrecen to Support Police Officers’ Housing with Five Additional Flats

In addition to the 40 flats already provided, the City of Debrecen will support the housing of police officers with a further five flats, Mayor László Papp announced at a press conference held at the Hajdú-Bihar County Police Headquarters on 8 September 2026.

The Mayor stressed that the city remains committed to supporting the work of the County Police Headquarters and the Debrecen City Police Headquarters. László Papp recalled that a similar decision had been announced a few months ago, when the Municipality of Debrecen and the city’s General Assembly granted the disaster management authorities the right to designate tenants for flats located in Debrecen.

Since 2015, the Municipality has provided 40 flats for the police force, and this has now been supplemented by a further five. “With this decision, we would like to help improve the housing conditions of police officers working to ensure the safety of the city and the county. Public safety is one of the most important factors determining quality of life in our city. We are proud that the City of Debrecen and the county have ranked among the best year after year in terms of crime statistics and the effectiveness of crime detection,” the Mayor emphasised. Thanking the police for their work, he added that with this decision, the Debrecen Municipality can contribute to making a career in the police force even more attractive in the county and in Debrecen.

Richárd Bakk, Chief of the Hajdú-Bihar County Police Headquarters, noted that an integral part of the police force’s human resources policy is to attract an increasing number of young police officers to each city. As he put it, Debrecen is not a developing city but a developed one, yet moving into a property of suitable quality represents a major challenge for many young people.

The Chief highlighted that these five flats would provide enormous assistance to five of their police colleagues who are facing housing difficulties. In Bakk Richárd’s view, recruiting officers to Debrecen is much easier when they can help ensure that serving in the police force is accompanied by suitable-quality housing. Finally, Bakk Richárd said that, just as Debrecen’s residents have been able to rely on the work of the police so far, they will continue to be able to do so, and the force will do everything in its power to provide the best possible public safety for people living here and for tourists visiting the city.
