Partnership Established Between UD Faculty of Economics and EY Hungary

The University of Debrecen’s Faculty of Economics is working with an increasing number of businesses to strengthen practical training. EY Hungary joined the faculty’s partners last year and, as part of the cooperation, a modern classroom has now also been opened. Thanks to the partnership, students can gain practical professional knowledge directly from the company’s experts.

Students at the University of Debrecen’s Faculty of Economics are now welcomed into a newly renovated classroom. The university is working with an increasing number of business partners who contribute to the transfer of practical knowledge and the professional development of students.

“I chose this faculty partly because I knew the programme was quite practice-oriented. I’ve already completed a shorter, two-week work placement. I’m a third-year student, so I’ll complete this academic year and then I have another full year of internship ahead of me,” said student Bálint Poroszlai.

Alongside companies in the manufacturing sector, an increasing number of service providers are also establishing long-term partnerships with the university. EY Hungary joined the initiative last December and, as part of the cooperation, a classroom has been renovated and equipped with an interactive whiteboard for a modern learning environment.

The audit and business advisory firm already delivered a tax-related course during the previous semester, and plans are now in place for lectures on accounting and auditing. So far, seven students from the university have joined the company, four of whom are currently completing their professional placements there.

“We want to complement textbook knowledge with a practical approach and real-world examples. One of our aims is also to introduce young people to the profession. Not everyone will start their career at EY, but we wish to see the local business community grow and become stronger as a result,” said Tamás Vékási, CEO of EY Hungary.

According to Rector Zoltán Bács, one of the results of the university’s increasingly close relationships with businesses is that more people are able to find employment as skilled workers in Debrecen. “This relationship is indeed becoming stronger and there are now entirely different forms of training as well. In the past, for example, there was no dual or cooperative education, where students essentially work while studying. The company and the student get to know each other, and this can potentially develop into a longer-term employment relationship,” he explained.

Twenty years ago, economics education at the University of Debrecen began with just six bachelor’s degree programmes. Today, it operates as an independent faculty with several thousand students and numerous business partners. Practice-oriented education continues to play a key role.
