Street Tree Pruning Continues in Debrecen

Alongside its highly successful tree-planting programme, the Municipality of Debrecen is also paying particular attention to preserving and continuously, systematically managing the city’s existing trees and avenues.

In addition to new tree-planting projects, the municipality continues to place great emphasis on protecting existing trees and preserving the city’s green fabric through measures included in the Green Codex, such as Debrecen’s street greening and tree-avenue reconstruction programme.

There are many distinctive mature tree avenues on Debrecen’s streets, and we take great care to protect them. The city’s tree stock and avenues are continuously monitored and assessed, while tree-care work is carried out systematically and according to a planned schedule.

The autumn, winter and early spring period, outside the bird nesting season, is ideal for systematic tree-care work. Accordingly, this autumn we are continuing the street tree-care and pruning work that began at various locations across the city at the beginning of this year. By the end of March, tree-care work had been carried out on more than 1,200 individual trees this year. The work is being carried out under the supervision of the municipal chief horticulturist and specialists from the Green Areas Department of the Mayor’s Office.

The specialist contractor’s work was planned to begin at the end of last year and the beginning of this year. Pruning has now been completed on Akadémia Street, Tessedik Sámuel Street, Kút Street (Phases I and II), Kiss Áron Street, Péchy Street, Szeremlei Street, Sarkadi Imre Street, Luther Street (Phase I), Budai Ézsaiás Street (Phase I), Postakert Street, Szotyori Street, Móricz Zsigmond Road (Phase I), Menyhárt József Square, Komlóssy Street (Phase II), Kar Street and Kölcsey Street. The work involved the removal of dead branches, crown reduction, formative pruning and rejuvenation pruning in the trees’ crowns.

Over the coming weeks, street tree-care work will continue on the following streets and public spaces, involving a total of around 400 trees: Honvédtemető Street, Salétrom Street, Angyalföld Square, Margit Square, Szabó Pál Street, Leiningen Street, Budai Ézsaiás Street (Phase II), Fényes udvar, Hétvezér Street and Monostorpályi Road.

Through the continuous care and replacement of tree avenues, greener streets, healthier trees, more liveable residential environments and sustainable urban development can be achieved. By ensuring continuous plant cover along the city’s streets, “everlasting tree avenues” can be created so that they can also be enjoyed by future generations.

Looking after mature trees is particularly important because over the decades these trees have created substantial areas of green space. Their canopies have significant dust-filtering and pollutant-absorbing capacities, while also producing oxygen. Thanks to their shade and transpiration, they create a cooler and therefore more tolerable microclimate in their surroundings during the summer heat. Tree avenues are an important tool for mitigating the urban heat-island effect and are therefore an indispensable part of the urban environment.

The work will continue on 5 October in the Csigekert district, on Honvédtemető Street. Local one-off interventions have already been carried out on some of the trees on this street in previous years, and 24 trees were pruned in March this year. On Honvédtemető Street, the pruning is justified not only by requests from local residents but also by professional considerations. The crown-reducing and deadwood pruning of the mature trees has become necessary. As part of the current programme, 57 ash-leaved maples will be cared for. This also demonstrates that the work forms part of a systematic, ongoing and comprehensive street tree-care programme designed to ensure that long-lived, safe tree avenues and tree stock can provide a liveable, green environment in urban conditions.
