Martyrs of Arad Commemorated at Several Locations in Debrecen
The Municipality of Debrecen is holding a memorial ceremony and wreath-laying ceremonies to mark the day of remembrance for the generals executed in Arad on 6 October 1849, following the Revolution and War of Independence.
In 2001, the Hungarian government declared 6 October a national day of mourning to commemorate the execution of the thirteen senior officers of the Hungarian Revolution and War of Independence – Lajos Aulich, János Damjanich, Aristid Dessewffy, Ernő Kiss, Károly Knézich, György Láhner (Lahner), Vilmos Lázár, Károly Leiningen-Westerburg, József Nagysándor, Ernő Poeltenberg, József Schweidel, Ignác Török and Károly Vécsey – and of Count Lajos Batthyány, Prime Minister of Hungary’s first responsible government, MTI reported.
The Debrecen programme began in Kossuth Square at 9:00 a.m. on 6 October, with the raising of the Hungarian flag and its lowering to half-mast.
10:00 a.m. – Memorial ceremony at the Dying Lion Monument in the Honvéd Cemetery (36 Honvédtemető Street).
11:00 a.m. – Wreath-laying at the József Nagysándor Memorial (beside Balmazújvárosi Road).
11:30 a.m. – Wreath-laying at the József Nagysándor memorial plaque on the wall of Recruitment Office No. 2 (58/A Péterfia Street).
