Necessary Repairs to Begin at Playgrounds in Debrecen with Safety Inspections Complete
Over the past few weeks, an independent certification body has inspected every piece of play equipment and every surface at playgrounds in public spaces across Debrecen. Taking place every three years, the safety inspection is primarily intended to assess the technical condition of playgrounds and prevent accidents. Debrecen has 101 public playgrounds, with a total of 687 pieces of play equipment.
“Specialists from a certification body inspected the entire infrastructure of the playgrounds, including the quality of the impact-absorbing surfaces, the structural stability of the play equipment and the condition of individual components. There are a great many wooden play structures, and these can wear out or rot and may need to be replaced,” said Orsolya Hamecz, Head of the Green Spaces Department. Where the inspection identified any equipment or component that did not meet safety requirements, the necessary repairs will be carried out in stages over the coming months.
On Wednesday, DEKERT staff began dismantling faulty play equipment at the playground in Jászai Mari Square. The affected area was cordoned off with warning tape to prevent children from accessing it until the defects have been repaired. “The same standard types of defects tend to crop up. These can be very minor issues, such as tightening screws or replacing protective caps. They may not pose an immediate accident risk, but where a protective cap is missing, for example, wasps sometimes like to nest inside,” explained Tamás Pethe, Managing Director of DEKERT Nonprofit Kft.
The municipality pays particular attention to maintaining and improving public playgrounds, having invested a total of HUF 270 million in playground development this year.
