Students compete with their technical and scientific projects at the Faculty of Engineering
The Faculty of Engineering of the University of Debrecen will host the Technical Science Section of the 37th National Scientific Student Conference (abbreviated in Hungarian as OTDK). Almost 600 entries will be judged over the next two days. Around 1,000 participants will attend the conference, which will also include cultural activities.
The Technical Science Section of the 37th National Scientific Student Association Conference has begun at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Debrecen. István Vajk Dienes attends a technical secondary school and plans to continue his studies in Debrecen, also in a technical field. “Essentially, I wrote my thesis on the residential application of a smart switch, which is currently at the forefront, if I may say so. And I decided to participate in the OTDK because it is very inspiring for me to be able to talk to other fellow researchers and see their work,” student of Kossuth Lajos Practice Grammar School of the University of Debrecen, István Vajk Dienes pointed out.
The main sponsor of the event is Krones Hungary Ltd. It is no coincidence, as they cooperate with the Faculty of Engineering in many areas. The company recently established a new design laboratory in the new wing of the faculty. “We have a subject that is taught here at the university, and now the main sponsor role, too. Basically because we consider the development of the engineering workforce important and we believe that we would like to join and support the university so that this can be achieved at an even higher level,” Managing Director of Krones Hungary Ltd., Zoltán Kocsis highlighted.
Deputy Mayor Lajos Barcsa spoke about the great importance of technical training in the city. This is clearly demonstrated by the fact that the number of students at the Faculty of Engineering has increased from 2000 to 3200 in recent years, and significant infrastructural developments have also been implemented here recently. “The city’s economy is in great need of these talented young people, as companies already here and new arrivals are also showing great interest in young engineering talents. So what we are talking about here is that engineering education and the training and training palette of the University of Debrecen were able to keep up with the needs of the economy,” Lajos Barcsa pointed out.
Behind the current event is more than 1 year of organisational work and a huge collaboration. Initially, a working group of 12 people worked on the organisation, but in recent times, 120 of the faculty’s 150 employees have been given some kind of task in order to ensure the smooth running of the conference. The 3-day professional meeting will also be accompanied by cultural events. “We expect several ensembles from the Faculty of Music, there will be a folk orchestra made up of students “not majoring in music”, and there will be an opportunity to learn dance. It is very important that the companies that have exhibited here can be visited by students for factory tours,” Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Géza Husi emphasised.
Over the next two days, around 600 entries will be judged and almost a thousand people will be hosted by the Faculty of Engineering. The results of the OTDK will be presented to the students on Friday.
