Flower arrangements decorate the University Square

The University of Debrecen is once again joining the Flower Carnival Flower City program this year. This time, the composition in front of the Main Building showcases the diversity and main characteristics of Hungarian gardening culture. The flower islands will decorate the University Square until Friday, August 22.

After lengthy preparations and planning, the flower islands were created in just over a week in the square in front of the university’s main building, based on the designs and under the supervision of certified gardener József Bíró.

“The University of Debrecen (UD) has been a regular participant in the Flower Carnival since 2008, as it is important for the institution to be part of the city’s cultural life during the flower festival. For the third time, the compositions, which are created specifically for the Flower City program and feature a different theme each year, take us on a journey through Hungarian landscapes, reflecting the diversity of the university and symbolizing the fact that its 30,000 students come from almost every corner of Hungary to pursue their higher education in Debrecen,” head of UD’s Event Coordination and Alumni Center, Mónika Rőfi, told hirek.unideb.hu.

The flower islands are the creations of the staff of UD Praktika Kft., which is also responsible for the maintenance of the university’s parks and green areas.

“This year’s flower carnival planting evokes the regional gardens found in Hungary: we can see wildflowers from the mountainous regions, admire a lowland farm garden with drought-tolerant plants and a vegetable garden, and a Mediterranean-style flower garden representing the southern Hungarian landscape will also be located in front of the university’s main building. In addition, the statues opposite the fountain will also be decorated with flowers,” certified gardener and managing director of UD Praktika Kft. József Bíró explained.

The gardens of the Domestic Landscape will be open to visitors until Friday, August 22, who will be able to take photos and selfies in front of the university’s main building in a floral setting befitting the Flower Carnival.
