Sports Facilities and Sports Clubs for Children in Debrecen: Winter Sports

Empowering Future Champions: The Debrecen Sports School (DSI): Since becoming part of the Debrecen Sports Centre in 2006, the Debrecen Sports School (DSI) has stood as a cornerstone of youth athletic development in the region. With more than 1,000 children training across 15 different divisions, DSI offers expert coaching, modern facilities, and regular opportunities to compete.

Let’s explore the range of winter sports offered by the Debrecen Sports School!

Debrecen Sports School/DSI – Speed Skating

  • The beginner group participates in training twice a week, while the advanced group participates five times a week.
  • The training sessions include both dry and ice training, which always takes place at the Debrecen Ice Rink. The dry training sessions are warm-ups, where children expand their basic movement skills. During ice training sessions, the focus is on skill exercises and learning the basic movements of speed skating.
  • Recommended ag to start speed skating: 5 to 9 years old, regardless of skating ability.

Debrecen Sports School/DSI – Figure Skating

  • Figure skating training sessions are open to the public and can be viewed at any time.
  • Interested parties can join the figure skating club by participating in the course selection process

Debrecen Jégkarc Association – Division of Debrecen Sports School/DSI – Figure Skating

  • Debrecen Jégkarc Association was founded in 2004 with the aim of supporting the development of figure skating in Debrecen and establishing a regional talent base in the short term. In addition to figure skating instruction, the association organizes skating courses and conducts physical education classes in schools, promoting skating as a recreational sport and helping children acquire the basic skills needed for ice sports.
  • Twice a year — in May and December — Jégkarc Association hosts public showcases where children from the skating courses, school students, and association members present what they’ve learned in a playful and engaging format.
  • As a member of the Hungarian National Figure Skating Federation, and since July 1, 2005, as a division of the Debrecen Sports School, the association’s athletes regularly participate in various international, national, and regional competitions.

In Debrecen, besides Debrecen Sports School/ DSI, the Debreceni Jégvirág Skating Sports Association also offers various skating training options.

  • The Debrecen Jégvirág Skating Sports Association (KSE) is an association based in Debrecen that promotes ice sports, teaches skating, and offers recreational activities aiming to goal to make skating popular among different age groups. 
  • Their trainings include skating, speed skating lessons, and recreational skating options.

After gliding on the ice, let’s explore what ice hockey opportunities Debrecen has to offer.

Debrecen Hockey Club/Debrecen Ice Academy

  • The Debrecen Hockey Club is part of part of DEAC (Debreceni Egyetemi Atlétikai Club) which is a multi-sport club affiliated with the University of Debrecen. DEAC offers a wide range of sports programs for youth and adults, including ice hockey, football, basketball, handball, and more, playing a key role in promoting athletic development and community engagement in the region.
  • Since its establishment in 1989, Debrecen Hockey Club has been involved in the development of ice hockey in Debrecen. The club currently has 210 members, making it one of the largest clubs in the city in terms of its youth base.
  • The nationally exceptional facility background available to the association was created jointly with the Sportcentrum Public Benefit Nonprofit Ltd. and the Municipality of Debrecen.
  • The Debrecen Hockey Club is the right place if you want your child to learn how to skate, they are sure that your child will enjoy learning to skate just as much as they enjoy teaching them!
  • The Debrecen Hockey Club is also forming a women’s ice hockey team and is actively seeking opportunities for its players to compete in the national age-group championship as an independent girls’ team starting next season.

      • Basic skating skills are not required—everything is taught during the course.
      • Children aged 4 to 10 are eligible to apply.
      • Enrollment is open year-round, with no fixed start dates.
