Debrecen and its region are among the most popular travel destinations in Hungary
This year, tourist traffic exceeded 15 million people earlier than ever before, already at the end of September, according to data from the National Tourism Data Service Center.
According to Visit Hungary Zrt., the fifteen millionth guest was a domestic traveler who checked into one of the four-star hotels in the Pécs-Villány tourist region. Last year, the tourism sector only reached the same indicator much later, on October 18, which clearly shows that the desire to travel is not only unbroken, but also continues to gradually strengthen.
Domestic and international tourists visited the sights, cities, spas, wine regions and natural treasures of Hungary in a roughly half-and-half ratio.
“The fact that we have crossed the fifteen millionth guest mark three weeks earlier than last year clearly shows that Hungary’s tourist appeal is continuously growing. Conscious developments and Visit Hungary’s international and domestic data-driven and experience-based campaigns are not only achieving their goal but are also opening up new horizons for domestic tourism,” said Olivér Csendes, CEO of Visit Hungary.
International visitors love the capital, which continues to be the most attractive destination for them: Budapest received 36 percent of tourists, 13 percent more than at this time last year. Most of them came to our country from Germany, followed by Poland, Romania, the United Kingdom, and the Czech Republic. Among the rural cities, Siófok, Hévíz, Hajdúszoboszló, Győr, Szeged, Sárvár, and Bük were the most visited.
Hungarians voted for Lake Balaton. Most domestic guests set off from Budapest, Pest, Győr-Moson-Sopron, Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, and Hajdú-Bihar counties and chose the “Hungarian sea” as their destination. This was followed by the Mátra-Bükk region, the Budapest area, Debrecen and its region, and then the Tokaj and Nyíregyháza tourist regions.
The spa towns proved to be particularly attractive: many people also traveled to Siófok, Balatonfüred, Hajdúszoboszló, Zalakaros, and Hévíz. Tourism is booming, and the country is winning: the sector continues to be one of the most important driving forces of the domestic economy. This year, visitor traffic already exceeded 5 million people at the beginning of May, and barely five months later, it reached the 15 million milestone.
