World-class MRI equipment installed at the University of Debrecen

A cutting-edge MRI device—AI-supported, fast, and offering excellent image quality—was inaugurated at the Clinical Centre of the University of Debrecen on 19 November 2025. Using the new machine, 12 to 13 thousand patient examinations will be performed annually. The MRI unit was installed at the institution as part of the government’s Fast Track Programme.

“In recent years, the demand for imaging examinations has increased. Recognizing this, the government of Hungary decided to review the imaging equipment available in the Hungarian healthcare system and to provide adequate funding so that we can ensure access to the most modern devices. In two phases, high-value diagnostic imaging equipment—CT and MRI machines—will be procured within the Fast Track Programme, with a total value of forty billion forints,” explained Péter Takács, State Secretary for Health, during Wednesday’s press viewing of the new MRI device installed at the University of Debrecen.

The State Secretary added that healthcare in Debrecen is continuously developing, and the University of Debrecen is one of the flagships of the Hungarian healthcare system, where cutting-edge machines appear almost immediately—evidenced by the new MRI. He also emphasized that modern technology is worth nothing without the dedicated, high-quality work of healthcare professionals and physicians.

Takács announced that the government had increased funding for diagnostic imaging examinations by 20 billion forints per year, and the National Health Insurance Fund Manager has also launched a programme to reduce waiting lists. These measures are expected to increase the number of examinations and radically shorten waiting times.

Diána Széles, Deputy Mayor of Debrecen, stressed that Debrecen is a prime example of cooperation working well in healthcare. “The Clinical Centre does excellent work, and patients in the region receive high-quality care at the institution. The government of Hungary provides the resources necessary for this high-level care, while the municipality has taken on the tasks related to prevention. Thanks to this coordinated cooperation, we can truly say that patients in Debrecen are indeed safe,” stated the Deputy Mayor.

At the Medical Imaging Clinic of the University of Debrecen’s Clinical Centre, more than 100 thousand examinations were performed over ten years with the old MRI device, but it has now worn out and needed replacement. “The new 3-tesla MRI unit is an extremely advanced, fast, high-image-quality machine, whose speed and superb image quality are due to a number of solutions supported by artificial intelligence. The device is optimal, among other things, for examinations of the central nervous system and is essential in diagnosing virtually all neurological disease processes. In addition, this unit is used for examining neurosurgical patients, and it plays an indispensable role in modern therapeutic planning, therapy monitoring, and evaluating therapeutic response—particularly in the case of pelvic tumours such as cervical, ovarian, or prostate cancer. With the new device, we will perform twelve to thirteen thousand examinations annually,” emphasized Professor Ervin Berényi, Director of the Medical Imaging Clinic at the University of Debrecen Clinical Centre.

As part of the investment, the facilities—including the machine room, the MRI examination room, and partly the control room—were also renovated.
