The University of Debrecen University shapes tomorrow’s professionals
Today, companies are eager to join the dual training program, as mentioned in Médiacentrum Debrecen’s CampusTalk program.
Dual training and cooperative training are two practice-oriented models that play an increasingly important role in the cooperation between universities and companies, as well as in the professional development of students.
Veronika Fenyves, Dean of the Faculty of Economics at the University of Debrecen, and Kornél Eisler, Head of Finance and Administration at Neopac Hungary Kft., spoke about how these systems work, what advantages they offer, and what they experience in practice.
Dual training was first launched with the Supply Chain Management Master’s degree program in 2017 at the Faculty of Economics at the University of Debrecen.
“Dual training was brought into being by the needs of companies and students, as well as university practice-oriented training. It was started in Germany, and German practice gradually became integrated into the Hungarian education system. The initiatives at that time also motivated us to embark on this path, which was not easy at the time, but we have a beautiful path behind us and a beautiful future ahead of us,” pointed out Veronika Fenyves.
She recalled that at the beginning they went from company to company and explained to everyone what benefits could be derived from this training form, the three actors of which are the company, the student, and the university itself.
“Until the companies tried it out and experienced what it meant, it was difficult, but today we are at a point where a company ‘knocks’ almost every week, and we are not looking for them,” she continued.
Neopack Hungary Kft. was among the first companies to join dual training.
“Several of us at the company thought that social responsibility was important; many of us remembered that we had received mentors in our lives, which is why we wanted to participate in this,” said Kornél Eisler. As he mentioned, cooperation in the team is a very important issue, and the students participating in the dual training can be seen developing in this regard month after month.
“From the first day, we view them as team members, and they participate in everything that a full-time employee participates in,” he emphasized.
Veronika Fenyves talked about the fact that there is no difference between the traditional education system and the classroom structure of dual training.
“There is the so-called classic Kecskemét system, when students are at the university during the academic period and work at the company during the exam period, and there is the other system, when the student is engaged both at the company and at the university.
In such cases, we arrange the schedule so that they have the opportunity to work 8 hours on certain days. The company that enters this circle supports the student’s studies,” she explained.
In addition, a so-called cooperative training has also developed, which was launched for the first time this year at the Faculty of Economics. Cooperative training is divided similarly to dual training; students spend two days at the university and three days at the companies.
Veronika Fenyves believes that both dual and cooperative training are recommended for any company that is committed to supporting young people.
“We conclude a cooperation agreement with the company; from then on it enters the selection process, but if it does not find a student it wants to hire or the students do not choose it, then there is no obligation,” she revealed.
Kornél Eisler highlighted that with the students who graduated from dual training, Neopack was able to replace the workforce they needed. Their first principle is that those who cannot be hired should also be able to find a job and start in the job market with a good foundation.
