Debrecen students showcased pioneering solutions in Spain

The NeurotechEU Student Council, established to advance neuroscience, organized the idea competition titled NeuroSpark Hackathon at Miguel Hernández University in Elche, Spain, bringing together students from ten European universities for a 24‑hour innovation marathon.

Divided into seven international teams, participants were tasked with developing functional prototypes and applications to address neurological problems using wearable devices that detect the brain’s electrical activity. They were tasked with developing new, working prototypes and applications that provide solutions to neurological problems using a wearable device or interface that detects the electrical activity of the human brain.

The University of Debrecen —which is the founder of the NeurotechEU Association—is currently participating in the organization as an associated partner, and the institution was represented in the competition by three students:

  • The team, which included Péter Antal, a student at the Faculty of Economics, and Nicolas Peña, a student at the Faculty of Engineering, worked on how to reduce the so-called phantom limb pain with increased precision neural control.
  • Máté Majoros, a student at the Faculty of Informatics, was involved in the development of an Android phone application that would provide assistance to those struggling with identifying human emotions using real-time EEG data.

“The involvement of three different faculties indicates that brain research is no longer just the privilege of the medical and natural science fields, but that it is also essential to involve engineering, IT, and economic knowledge in developing actually usable solutions. The projects created in less than 24 hours were about incredible creativity, teamwork, and deep understanding of the topic,” stated Péter Szücs, Director of the Institute of Anatomy, Histology, and Development of the Faculty of General Medicine of the University of Budapest and Scientific Coordinator of the NeurotechEU of the University of Budapest.

József Tőzsér, Vice-Rector for Sector Development responsible for Life Sciences, and Orsolya Gregán, Head of the International R&D Relations Center, took an active role in the success of the UD NeurotechEU team. The trip was facilitated by Orsolya Jánosy, Head of the International Office, through the Pannónia Program.
