A time capsule in Debrecen pays tribute to the first Hungarian space plant experiments
A special time capsule has been placed at the Böszörményi Road campus of the University of Debrecen to commemorate the first Hungarian space‑plant experiments.
As part of the Vitapric program, the capsule contains seeds identical to those used in the plant biology space experiments.
The University of Debrecen is participating in space research with two projects: alongside studies on cerebral hemorrhage dynamics, the focus is on examining plant germination, microgreen production, and leaf development.
For the experiments, astronaut Tibor Kapu carried one thousand radish, wheat, and pepper seeds into space. The central question of the research is how life can be created in the shortest possible time with minimal water use and the most complex utilization.
The burial of the time capsule was a highlight of the Plant Breeding Memorial Day and Conference, attended by Bertalan Farkas, the first Hungarian astronaut. He remarked that breeding space plants offers researchers a professional opportunity.
“As an astronaut who traveled into space 45 years ago, I believe it makes a huge difference what food will be available for astronauts working on the surface of the Moon or Mars. This is a tremendous achievement,” said astronaut and brigade general Bertalan Farkas.
