Autonomous Taxis May Appear in Debrecen Within a Decade
The University of Debrecen is also involved in the development of autonomous vehicles, as discussed by Géza Husi, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, on Tuesday’s edition of Médiacentrum Debrecen’s Esti közelkép. He considers engineering education in Debrecen capable of keeping pace with the industrial technological transformation currently taking place.
Industry Day was held a few months ago at the University of Debrecen’s Faculty of Engineering. The event, which featured more than 20 companies, placed particular emphasis on the automotive industry. This is the city’s fastest-growing sector, and many young people interested in engineering sciences would like to build their careers in this field.
Students at the Faculty of Engineering can acquire practical knowledge in the most advanced technological environment, keeping pace with developments in industry. This is illustrated by the fact that self-driving cars could arrive in Debrecen as early as this summer to further develop the new technology, while within a decade self-driving taxis could be travelling along the city’s roads. “At present, they are being tested and trained for various traffic situations at the ZalaZONE test track. The system is currently at Level 2 control, or Level 2 autonomous driving, and we aim to develop it to Level 4. Level 2 roughly corresponds to what the most advanced cars with self-driving capabilities can do today,” explained Géza Husi, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Debrecen.
He also stated that Debrecen is actively shaping the future of the global automotive industry, while engineering education in Debrecen is able to keep pace with the technological transformation currently under way, which points towards increased collaboration between workers and robots in manufacturing.
