Average Income in Debrecen District Now Above National Average
Earnings among people living in the Debrecen district have risen significantly over the past 15 years. Between 2010 and 2025, the gross average earnings of full-time employees increased more than three-and-a-half-fold, from HUF 203,000 in 2010 to HUF 743,000. According to EDC Debrecen’s analysis, wage growth has accelerated particularly sharply in recent years. “Average incomes rose markedly after 2021. This coincided with the period when the labour-market impact of several major investments began to be felt, with an increasing number of new jobs being created in Debrecen,” said Zoltán Pécskay, Managing Director of EDC Debrecen.
The arrival of major manufacturing investments in the city has significantly reshaped the local labour market. Competition among companies for workers has also affected wages, while the structure of the economy has changed as well.
It is important to note, however, that the statistics do not show the incomes of people working exclusively in Debrecen. The data cover the earnings of full-time employees living in the Debrecen district. This means they also include people who live in Debrecen but work in another district, while the earnings of commuters who work in Debrecen but live elsewhere are not included in the figures. “If we looked exclusively at incomes paid by employers in Debrecen, we would probably see even more dynamic growth. The current data are linked to people’s place of residence rather than their place of work,” Zoltán Pécskay stressed.
According to the head of the economic development centre, however, the number of new jobs alone will no longer be the decisive factor in the years ahead. It will become increasingly important what qualifications and knowledge the new positions require and how much added value they generate. The labour market and the education and training system will therefore also need to adapt to the changing economic environment. In the future, workers with the knowledge and skills required for higher-value-added, technology-intensive roles are likely to be in an increasingly advantageous position.
According to EDC’s analysis, Debrecen’s economic development is therefore becoming increasingly visible not only in the scale of investment and the number of new jobs created, but also in the evolution of local incomes.
