Another Traffic Restriction Coming for Debrecen’s Northern Bypass

Construction of the extension of Domokos Márton Road has reached a new stage. Completed in January 2020, the first section of Domokos Márton Road was built as a municipal investment between Balmazújvárosi Road (Main Road 33) and the eastern end of Vezér Street. The road is 1.1 kilometres long and has two lanes, each more than 3 metres wide. The project also included the installation of street lighting and the construction of a drainage system.

Even at the time, there were plans to extend the road from its current terminus to Main Road 354, also known as Debrecen’s northern bypass, and the municipality and the government subsequently reached an agreement to continue the project with state funding. A new 2×1-lane road approximately 1.5 kilometres long is being built between Main Road 354 and Vezér Street. It will connect to Main Road 354 via a grade-separated junction.

The municipality has now announced that the existing temporary traffic restrictions will need to be reconfigured due to asphalt milling and paving works on Main Road 354. Between kilometres 1+700 and 3+100 of Main Road 354, the existing traffic restriction will be reconfigured, reducing the road from 2×2 lanes to 2×1 lanes. Continuous traffic in both directions, with one lane in each direction, will remain possible.

The restriction is expected to be in force from 1 September until the beginning of October.

The new road will help relieve traffic on several busy routes. For example, traffic on Balmazújvárosi Road and Vezér Street could decrease, while it will also provide an alternative to Böszörményi Road. “Once the entire road is completed, it will be the obvious route for those travelling from the north towards the central or southern parts of the city, while also serving as a significant traffic-relief route running parallel to Böszörményi Road,” Mayor László Papp said previously.

In addition, new road connections will be built to the sites of major companies including BMW, ThyssenKrupp and Ewe Power.

The road is being built with state funding at a gross cost of HUF 8 billion 250 million.
