CATL builds the world’s largest energy storage system

“The world’s largest combined solar and battery energy storage system is being built in Abu Dhabi by CATL and Masdar of the United Arab Emirates. The record-breaking system will provide 5.2 gigawatts of solar power and 19 gigawatt-hours of energy storage capacity. The project will be based on CATL’s TENER technology, which offers outstanding security and performance. The system is expected to be commissioned in 2027,” the company said.

CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited.), which is also building a factory in Debrecen, signed a cooperation agreement with Masdar, a state-owned renewable energy company in the United Arab Emirates, on 17 January. The partnership will see the world’s first large-scale, round-the-clock project combining solar energy harvesting with battery energy storage in Abu Dhabi.

The investment, worth more than $6 billion (about 2,360 billion forints), aims to build 5.2 gigawatts of solar energy and 19 gigawatt hours of energy storage capacity, meaning that not only will the system be the largest of its kind in the world, but the energy storage capacity itself will also be a record-breaking one after its completion in 2027. The system is planned to be able to provide 1 gigawatt of baseload electricity 24 hours a day, every day of the week.

“For Masdar’s largest and most ambitious project to date, we wanted to work with partners that were working to industry-leading standards, which is why we chose CATL,”  Chief Operating Officer of Masdar Abdulaziz Alobaidli said.

CATL will implement the investment using its TENER technology, which offers outstanding safety and high performance, exceptional safety design, long life and high level of integration, to guarantee the reliable operation and high efficiency of the entire system. In designing TENER, the company has built on previous product developments to improve the level of protection and energy distribution of the energy storage system. TENER is thus able to adapt to different topographical features, climatic conditions and energy storage needs, providing a compact solution to hectically fluctuating electricity demands.

Founded in 2006, Masdar is playing a key role in promoting the UAE’s global leadership in the fight against sustainability and climate change. The company has successfully implemented projects and partnered in more than 40 countries, with the aim of increasing the capacity of its renewable energy portfolio to 100 gigawatts by 2030.
