Citywide Consultation to be Launched on Redevelopment of University Square

One of Debrecen’s most significant public spaces, University Square, is set to undergo extensive redevelopment, as announced by the University of Debrecen on 12 June. The iconic park in front of the Main Building will be transformed in several phases following an agreement between the city and the University, under which responsibility for managing the site was transferred to the University on 1 June.

The project and its visual design published by the University have generated considerable public debate on social media, with many local residents and MP Enikő Tompa arguing that the area should be redesigned with more trees and shrubs in response to the challenges posed by the climate crisis. They believe that increasing green vegetation would provide greater shade, improve the local microclimate, and make the square more resilient to rising temperatures.

“The square in front of the Main Building of University of Debrecen is one of our city’s most beautiful and best-known public spaces, and any intervention must be approached with the utmost professionalism. It is necessary to balance the protection of both the built and natural heritage, the usability of the square, and the prominent visibility of the recently renovated and magnificent Main Building that rises behind it,” Mayor László Papp wrote on his Facebook page on 14 June.

As he noted in response to the ongoing debate, the character of the protected French-style garden must be respected. For this reason, it is not appropriate to envisage turning the square into a forest, however fashionable such arguments may be in the context of the climate crisis. The proposed visual design published by the University of Debrecen should by no means be regarded as final or definitive. The concept requires further consideration; however, the city administration is committed to being a partner in the careful and considered refurbishment of the square.

The Mayor also stated that he had consulted with Rector Zoltán Bács, and that the University will open the way for a citywide consultation so that proposals from both city residents and members of the university community can be submitted to decision-makers through a dedicated platform. Further details will be published shortly by the University of Debrecen. He also proposed that the University’s leadership establish a professional review panel to evaluate the submitted proposals and development plans, ensuring that the park’s values are preserved and that any redevelopment meets the highest professional standards.
