Debrecen Bicycle Museum Turns One – Expansion Ahead for the Unique Collection
Exactly one year ago, the Debrecen Bicycle Museum opened its doors, showcasing the private collection of Attila Katona.
Through his exhibits, visitors can take a journey through the history of cycling, with the oldest bicycle dating back to 1817. Over the past year, the museum has become a true gem in the city’s cultural landscape.
The anniversary was celebrated with communal singing and a group bike ride, during which it was announced that the museum will soon expand with an additional exhibition space. This will allow the display of over 200 vintage and modern bicycles, up from the current 110. The expansion not only increases the size of the collection but also strengthens Debrecen’s position on the map of experience-based tourism.
Two-time velocipede world champion Sándor Halápi described the museum’s atmosphere as captivating: “Even when I get home, I still think about what I saw there—it leaves a lasting impression.”
Attila Katona, collector and restorer of vintage bicycles, considers the museum’s success beyond expectations: “Many people come, even those who don’t know much about bicycles. I guide them through the exhibition, and of course, many fellow collectors visit as well.”
Deputy Mayor Diána Széles emphasized the importance of such unique attractions: “These are the kinds of experiences that define how we feel when leaving a city. We gain memories and impressions that make us say, Yes, I saw something here that I couldn’t see anywhere else in the country or the world. I believe these little gems are what make Debrecen a destination worth visiting.”
To mark the museum’s birthday, visitors were invited to join a celebratory bike ride—an apt tribute to the past, present, and future of cycling.
