Debrecen Clinical Centre Introduces Next‑Level Rorschach Diagnostics
A new psychodiagnostic method introduced at the Clinical Centre of the University of Debrecen makes faster and more accurate diagnosis possible. As unideb.hu reports, the internationally standardised procedure (R-PAS) is a further-developed system of the more than 100-year-old Rorschach examination, the so-called inkblot test, built on the most modern scientific results. The method is applied in clinical practice by the staff of the Clinical Specialist Psychology Centre.
The Clinical Specialist Psychology Centre was established in 2022. The independent service and patient care unit at the Clinical Centre supports patients’ psychological recovery and care with 54 psychologists across 32 outpatient clinics in 20 specialist medical fields.
The new psychodiagnostic method introduced at the Specialist Psychology Centre, the Rorschach Performance Assessment System (R-PAS), can be regarded as a significant professional milestone. R-PAS is a modern, standardised and empirically supported system for applying and evaluating the Rorschach examination.
“In modern healthcare, innovation does not exclusively mean acquiring new instruments. Methodological renewal is just as important for achieving more accurate diagnosis and more effective patient care. The Rorschach examination is one of the best-known tools in clinical psychology, with a history of more than one hundred years. In recent decades, however – similarly to other fields of medicine – standardisation and the evidence-based principle, the scientific evidence-based approach, have gained increasing importance in psychodiagnostics as well. R-PAS represents this renewal: it provides a unified interpretative framework, empirically grounded indicators and clinically relevant feedback. Thanks to its very significant scientific background, the method enables more accurate diagnosis than procedures previously used,” said Antal Bugán, university professor and professional coordinator of the Clinical Specialist Psychology Centre, to hirek.unideb.hu.
The Rorschach examination is the most fundamental and most detailed test developed to determine personality traits. During the assessment, five black-and-white and five coloured symmetrical inkblots are shown to patients, who explain what they believe the image resembles or what it reminds them of. The responses are analysed by the psychologist using various procedures. The evaluation system is continuously developed based on international standards. As a result of this process, the R-PAS method was created.
“One of the most significant changes is that the evaluation process, replacing the previous time-consuming manual method, is now supported by a modern computer program and carried out according to international standards, relying on an extensive database. Whereas the traditional procedure took several hours, or in some cases even days, the new system produces a detailed profile of the examined person in a fraction of that time. This significantly accelerates the diagnostic process, allowing therapy to begin as soon as possible and contributing to further improvements in the efficiency of patient care,” explained Réka Majer, deputy professional coordinator of the Clinical Specialist Psychology Centre.
Specialists at the Clinical Specialist Psychology Centre acquired the modern diagnostic procedure through a specialised introductory training course. Professionals who successfully completed the course obtained authorisation to use the programme, acquired with the support of the University of Debrecen and the Clinical Centre, in their diagnostic work, further strengthening the institution’s professional toolkit and the standard of patient care.
