Debrecen Drive Professional Forum Discusses City’s Role in Automotive Industry

Future-proof educational methods, current investment and technological trends, and opportunities for integration into supplier chains were among the key topics at the opening event of Debrecen Drive. During the professional forum, leading figures from the automotive industry, representatives of academia, and heads of economic organisations reviewed the region’s economic challenges and development opportunities.

A 53-hectare solar park currently supplies approximately one quarter of the energy demand of BMW’s Debrecen factory. At the forum, the company’s Head of Communications stated that the Debrecen facility is the first BMW plant to operate entirely on renewable energy without the use of natural gas. He added that, in the interest of sustainability, the company is also striving to keep its supply chain as short as possible, which is why key partners have established operations in close proximity to the factory. “There are also other important aspects from the perspective of the circular economy. One particularly significant factor is how materials and resources are utilised, which closely relates to the principle of local-for-local production. This means that our partners are located as close to one another as possible, allowing value chains and supply chains to remain as short as possible. This also contributes to achieving our broader sustainability goals,” said Oliver Gschwandtner, Head of Communications at BMW Group Debrecen.

One of the main sponsors of this year’s Debrecen Drive is Eve Power Hungary Kft. According to Ádám Kovács, Head of Corporate Relations, sustainable mobility is not merely a manufacturing or technological issue. Education, research and development, the involvement of small and medium-sized enterprises, and job creation also play important roles. “A strong economic ecosystem can only succeed if large corporations, universities, professional organisations, SMEs and the local community are able to develop together. For us, Debrecen represents this kind of long-term partnership,” he emphasised.

Zoltán Bács, Rector of the University of Debrecen, highlighted that university thinking has undergone significant transformation over the past decade. The focus today is on how the university can develop together with the city and the major companies arriving in Debrecen. Objectives are now defined jointly to ensure that the institution’s education and research activities effectively support the automotive industry. “With this industrial development, the era has ended for universities that focus solely on education without considering what has since become both a new responsibility and a new opportunity for us. It has opened enormous perspectives for constructive development and cooperation with industry,” the Rector explained.

Mayor László Papp stated that Debrecen recognised in time that the economy of the 21st century would be shaped by new key sectors, including the automotive industry, electromobility, digitalisation, and green technology. He noted that over the past decade and a half, Debrecen has become one of the important meeting points for global economic players. “Without these economic relationships represented by global corporations, we would have no opportunity to integrate into the world’s economic and technological circulation. At the same time, we can only truly speak of success if local small and medium-sized enterprises are also able to benefit from this development,” the Mayor pointed out.

One of Hungary’s largest automotive exhibitions, Debrecen Drive features more than 1,000 exhibited vehicles across 50,000 square metres, accompanied by an extensive programme of events.
