Debrecen-Manufactured BMW Wins More Prestigious Awards

BMW Group Plant Debrecen was officially opened a year ago, and series production of the first Neue Klasse model has been under way there since October. The iX3 has already received a string of major accolades, including “World Car of the Year 2026” (across all powertrain categories) and “Electric Car of the Year 2026,” and has now won two more major awards.

First, it received the Best Interior and Infotainment award at the 2027 German Car of the Year (GCOTY) awards. Meanwhile, BMW’s sixth-generation battery technology won the Global New Energy Vehicle Technology Innovation Award in China at the World New Energy Vehicle Congress (WNEVC). BMW was the only non-Chinese carmaker to receive such a technology award.

One of the key new features of the iX3’s interior is a display system projecting across the full width of the windscreen, along with a new multifunction steering wheel and a 19-inch central display.

The iX3 features sixth-generation electric components, with a different battery chemistry and cylindrical rather than prismatic cells, making them easier to cool, which is important for power delivery. A pioneering innovation is that the car’s electric motors operate without rare-earth elements or permanent magnets. The all-electric car has a top speed of 210 km/h, achieved with electric motors capable of higher rotational speeds than their predecessors, meaning no gearbox is required either.

Meanwhile, the iX3 is becoming available to customers in an increasing number of countries, and it is being promoted in an unusual way in Brazil. In São Paulo, a huge illuminated “face” of an iX3 has been installed in one of the shop windows of the JK Iguatemi shopping centre, showcasing the design language of the Neue Klasse.

The third shift has recently been introduced at the Debrecen plant, meaning production now runs around the clock. The workforce continues to grow, with the number of employees now exceeding 5,000. Recruitment is still ongoing, however. According to the company’s careers website, BMW Group Plant Debrecen is currently recruiting for 41 positions.
