Debrecen-Produced iX3 Becomes Best-Selling Electric BMW Model in Hungary
In the first half of 2026, BMW remained Hungary’s leading premium car brand compared with the same period last year, selling 3,909 vehicles, as announced in a statement to MTI on Monday. The company noted that, with a growth of 18.9 per cent exceeding the Hungarian new car market’s overall expansion of 13.3 per cent, BMW currently ranks sixth among all brands in the overall new car market. According to BMW Group Hungary’s earlier report, growth was even stronger in the first quarter of 2026, reaching 24.5 per cent.
The success achieved during the first half of the year was driven in part by the BMW X3 and the all-electric BMW iX3 produced in Debrecen. A total of 709 units of the two models were sold during the first six months of 2026, surpassing the pair’s total sales for the whole of last year, the statement said. Zoltán Németh, Head of Sales at BMW Group Hungary, highlighted that the Hungarian-built BMW iX3 had been very well received on the domestic market and had become BMW’s best-selling electric model during the first half of the year. He added that, with new additions to the model range, including the recently updated BMW 7 Series, the BMW X5, which celebrated its world premiere just a few days ago, and the BMW i3 models set to debut this autumn, the company expects sales momentum to continue throughout the remainder of the year.
According to the statement, the brand’s battery electric vehicle (BEV) models also performed well during the first half of the year. A total of 615 fully electric vehicles were sold, accounting for 15.7 per cent of BMW’s total sales in Hungary. The most popular fully electric BMW was the BMW iX3 produced at the Debrecen plant, with 239 vehicles delivered to customers.
The statement also provided an update on the performance of the group’s other brand, MINI. A total of 324 MINI vehicles were sold during the first half of 2026, representing an 18 per cent decline compared with the same period last year. The company attributed the slowdown partly to the particularly high base recorded in the first half of the previous year. At the same time, it highlighted that more than one-third of customers of the British premium brand( 34.8 per cent) chose a fully electric MINI model.
BMW Motorrad reported the registration of 551 new motorcycles in Hungary, representing growth of 12.7 per cent compared with the 489 units registered during the same period last year.
According to previous information released by BMW Group Hungary, a total of 7,052 BMW vehicles were sold on the Hungarian new car market last year, representing annual growth of 22 per cent. This marked the third consecutive year in which BMW led the premium segment in Hungary, with a market share of 34.1 per cent.
The premium segment accounted for 15 per cent of the 129,440 passenger cars sold on the Hungarian market in 2025.
Globally, the German BMW Group sold 2.46 million cars and more than 202,500 motorcycles in 2025. The company generated total revenue of €133.5 billion and recorded a profit of €10.2 billion during the 2025 financial year, according to MTI.
