Debrecen ranks high in a recent livability ranking

For the fourth time, MBH Mortgage Bank has carried out its Livability Survey, which aims to examine the factors influencing the demand for housing in different areas of Hungary.

According to MBH Mortgage Bank’s fourth edition of the Liveability ranking, the list is again led by Budapest, followed by Debrecen district. Pannonhalmi district came in third place, and Budakeszi district came in fourth place, up from seventh last year.

Pilisvörösvár, Bácsalmási, Dunakeszi and Veszprém districts are also in the top ten, and Kisbér and Érd districts have returned to the top ten after 2022. The Győr district was ranked 11th this year, Pécs and its surroundings 13th and Szeged 14th.

The communication pointed out that regional differences remained. In terms of the criteria examined, districts in the northeastern region of the country have the lowest scores. While in the south, around the capital and in the northwest there are several districts with higher scores.

In education, Budapest and the western and southern parts of the country are the top scorers, while larger cities in the north and east tend to score higher.

In the health indicator, the top three rankings are unchanged compared to last year, with Budapest in first place, followed by Pécs and Gyula. Overall, health scores are stronger in the southern districts of the country.

In the area of culture, the big cities, Budapest, Debrecen, Szeged and Pécs offer the most opportunities, and the locations around Lake Balaton are favourable.

There are relatively large differences in labour market opportunities between different parts of Hungary. The north-western regions and Budapest score clearly higher than the southern and eastern parts of the country.

There was no significant change in the least affordable districts compared to last year, with the districts around Lake Balaton, which face high housing prices relative to incomes, again at the bottom of the list, and Budapest again in the bottom ten. Larger cities continue to rank worse in terms of crime statistics.

Budapest also tops the ranking for liveability among the county-seat municipalities. However, the top four are unchanged from last year, with Veszprém in second place, Pécs in third and Győr in fourth place.

Szekszárd, Székesfehérvár, Szombathely, Szeged, Debrecen and Zalaegerszeg are also at the top.

Salgótarján proved to be the most affordable again this year, followed closely by Miskolc and Békéscsaba. Looking at the health index, Pécs finished with the best result, followed by Miskolc and Veszprém.
