Development is progressing well to relieve traffic congestion on busy roads in Debrecen

The continuation of Domokos Márton Road is already in full swing, and next year an internal transport corridor could be created in the eastern part of Debrecen. The goal is to connect residential areas between main roads and relieve the burden on high-traffic roads.

The Szoboszlói Road-Külsővásártér junction can reach ninety percent completion by November. According to the original plans, the work here would only have been completed next spring, but construction is progressing well, so the interchange could be in use by the end of the year.

The development of Csigekert-Füredi Street is also progressing according to schedule, and it is expected that traffic will be able to resume on Csigekert and Szabó Lőrinc Streets in mid-November.

Head of the city operations department, Zsombor Gábor, informed that the construction of the road section between Domokos Márton kert, Vezér Street, and Main Road 354 began in March. According to the contractual deadline, the one-and-a-half-kilometer-long, double single-lane suburban road should be completed by November 2026.

According to the plans, the new section will connect to Main Road 354 at a separate junction, where a bridge is also being built, further improving the transport connections of the region.

The new road section and junction may relieve the burden on high-traffic roads, such as Balmazújvárosi Street, Vezér Street, and Böszörményi Street. For this purpose, an internal traffic corridor is planned to be created in the eastern part of the city from Main Road 471 to Main Road 48.

“In many cases, existing residential buildings and other facilities physically limit the possibility of expanding existing roads, since the cross-section of the roads cannot be increased further. That is why the city is also including a new conceptual element in its transport development program: the creation of alternative traffic corridors,” Mayor László Papp said.

He added that the preparation of the subsidy contract is already underway, so road construction in the eastern part of Debrecen could start as early as next year. The investment is expected to cost HUF 6.2 billion.
