Drinking Water Distribution During Heat Alert in Debrecen

During the Level 3 heat alert, the Municipality of Debrecen is supporting residents by distributing drinking water and operating misting stations throughout the city. Between 30 July and 4 August, volunteers from the Debrecen Charity Board will distribute water at the junction of Hatvan Street and Kossuth Square, while cooling and misting facilities will be in operation at several locations. The city is urging residents to ensure adequate hydration, with particular attention paid to children and older people.

In response to the heat alert, which comes into effect at 00:00 on Thursday, 30 July 2026, the Municipality of Debrecen will organise drinking water distribution in the city centre between 30 July and 4 August. Water will be available daily, including weekends, between 11:00 and 15:00. Volunteers from the Debrecen Charitable Board will provide drinking water to passers-by at the junction of Hatvan Street and Kossuth Square, near the Lőrinc Szabó statue.

Prevention is especially important during periods of extreme summer heat. In addition to distributing water, the city is operating misting stations at several locations to help alleviate the effects of high temperatures. These facilities are available at Kossuth Square, Kálvin Square, Csapó Street, Tócóskert, Angyalföld Square and the Water Tower Promenade.

To mitigate the impact of the heat, municipal specialists are also paying increased attention to the irrigation of the city’s green spaces. Public plants and landscaped areas are watered in the early morning or late evening hours, with particular emphasis placed on the operation of automatic irrigation systems. Public drinking fountains and ornamental fountains continue to operate throughout the period, providing opportunities for residents to cool down and refresh themselves.

The Municipality of Debrecen is asking residents to pay particular attention to children, older people, pregnant women and those living with cardiovascular conditions. It is especially important that no one leaves home without carrying water, and residents are also reminded not to forget their pets, ensuring they have access to sufficient fresh drinking water during hot weather. Children, elderly people and animals must never be left unattended in parked vehicles, even for a short period, as vehicle interiors can heat up extremely quickly and reach life-threatening temperatures.
