EUR 1.5 Billion in EU Loans Available to European Battery Manufacturers
The European Commission has officially launched Battery Booster Facility, a programme aimed at accelerating European battery production and strengthening the continent’s competitiveness in the electric vehicle market, as reported by Autonavigátor.
According to the article, the initiative could make up to EUR 1.5 billion in interest-free loans available to companies manufacturing battery cells.
In recent years, Europe’s battery industry has built up significant production capacity. However, the dominance of competitors from Asia and the electric vehicle market’s growing slower than expected have placed increasing pressure on the sector. The Commission believes that the new support instrument arrives at a crucial time, as factories move from the development phase towards large-scale production.
This is the first time that the Commission has provided direct support to manufacturers in the form of interest-free loans. The scheme is open to companies that are building or expanding battery cell manufacturing capacity within the European Economic Area.
The Commission expects the initiative to attract new private investment into Europe’s battery industry while also helping to increase the share of locally produced batteries used in electric vehicles manufactured in Europe. The Battery Booster programme has a total budget of EUR 1.8 billion, of which EUR 1.5 billion will be allocated directly to supporting battery cell production, while a further EUR 300 million will be used to develop European supply chains for critical raw materials.
