Debrecen Introduces Several Measures to Help Residents During Heat Alert
During the Level 2 heat alert, the Municipality of Debrecen is once again assisting residents by distributing drinking water and operating misting stations across the city. Between 22 and 26 June, volunteers from the Debrecen Charity Board will hand out water at the junction of Hatvan Street and Kossuth Square, while cooling and misting facilities will operate at several locations. The city is urging residents to ensure adequate hydration, with particular attention to children and older people.
In response to the Level 2 heat alert, the Municipality of Debrecen is organising drinking water distribution in the city centre between 22 and 26 June, on weekdays from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Volunteers from the Debrecen Charity Board will take part in the initiative, providing drinking water to passers-by at the junction of Hatvan Street and Kossuth Square, near Lőrinc Szabó’s statue.
During periods of extreme summer heat, prevention is especially important. In addition to distributing water, the city is operating misting stations at several locations to help reduce the effects of the heat. These cooling facilities can be found in Kossuth Square, Kálvin Square, Csapó Street, Tócóskert, Angyalföld Square and along the Water Tower Promenade.
To mitigate the impact of the heat, specialists are also paying increased attention to the watering of the city’s green spaces. Public vegetation is irrigated either at dawn or late in the evening, and particular emphasis is placed on the operation of automatic irrigation systems. Public drinking fountains and ornamental fountains are also operating continuously to help residents stay refreshed.
The Municipality of Debrecen is asking residents to pay special attention to children, older people, pregnant women and those living with cardiovascular conditions. It is particularly important that nobody leaves home without drinking water and that pets are not forgotten: they too should be provided with an adequate supply of fresh drinking water during the hot weather. Children, elderly people and animals must never be left in parked vehicles, even for a short period, as the interior temperature can rise extremely quickly to life-threatening levels.
