European Heritage Days in Debrecen – 2026

In 2003, UNESCO adopted the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, which Hungary joined in 2006. The international convention aims to preserve and pass on the practices, expressions, knowledge and skills that form part of communities’ cultural heritage.

Debrecen is once again joining the European Heritage Days event series in 2026, offering a varied range of events for visitors from 17 to 20 September.

17 September, 3:00 p.m.
Art Deco on the Great Plain – chamber exhibition commemorating architect István Sajó, born 130 years ago (New City Hall Gallery, 1 Kálvin Square)

17 September, 5:00 p.m.
Hidden Debrecen – guided tour by László D. Szabó of the archaeological exhibition Szepes annó, followed by a presentation of finds discovered this year from the village of Szentpál (Déri Museum, 1 Déri Square)

18 September, 9:00 a.m.
Our Heritage: Debrecen V – presentation of the Cívis House of the Year award, introduction of this year’s beneficiaries of the Built Heritage Renovation Programme, and conference (Szárító Műhely, 8 Szombathi István Street)

18 September, 2:00 p.m.
Great Plain City Walk (DEMKI Borsos Mansion, 1 Borsos József Square)

19 September, 10:00 a.m.
On the Border of Two Districts – a walk along Batthyány Street (Meeting point: 10–12 Szent Anna Street)

19 September, 3:00 p.m.
A journey through church history, from two exhibitions and the organ case to the bastion of the truncated tower (Museum of the Reformed College of Debrecen, 16 Kálvin Square)

19 September, 3:00 p.m.
Exploring the three-century-old former Roman Catholic cemetery (Meeting point: Budai Ézsaiás Street)

19 September, 5:00 p.m.
Guided tour by László Szabó of the archaeological exhibition Underground Debrecen (Déri Museum, 1 Déri Square)

20 September, 10:00 a.m.
In Search of a Debrecen Watermill (Meeting point: Regional Waste Management Site, 9/b Vértesi Street)

20 September, 4:00 p.m.
Exploring the Art Nouveau town house at 39 Darabos Street
(39 Darabos Street)

20 September, 5:00 p.m.
Great Plain City Walk (Meeting point: Véndiófa Csárda, Bocskaikert, 41 Debreceni Road)

Participating partners: CityLegends, Cívisporta, DEMKI-Borsos Villa, Department of Architecture, University of Debrecen, Déri Museum, Municipality of Debrecen, Főnix Architectural Documentation Association, and the City Protection and Beautification Association.
