Exhibition on Famous and Unsung Heroes of 1956 Revolution Opens at New City Hall Gallery in Debrecen
The Municipality of Debrecen and the Hajdú-Bihar County Organisation of the Imre Nagy Society have organised an exhibition at the New City Hall Gallery to mark the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Revolution and War of Independence. Entitled Famous and Unsung Heroes of the 1956 Revolution, the exhibition opened on 22 October 2026, the day before Hungary’s national holiday.
At the opening ceremony, Deputy Mayor István Puskás noted that this was the third exhibition in recent days in Debrecen to explore the events of 1956. These exhibitions help people not only to obtain historically accurate information about what happened 70 years ago, but also to connect with those events and try to see, understand and experience them from the inside.
He said this was particularly important for generations who have no personal experience of the events. The Deputy Mayor also highlighted two other exhibitions in the city: one at the Kiss-Nagy Contemporary Gallery commemorating Lajos Bíró and Árpád Bényi, and a temporary exhibition at the Déri Museum titled Mario De Biasi: Hungary 1956, featuring photographs taken by an Italian photographer.
László Oláh, President of the Hajdú-Bihar County Organisation of the Imre Nagy Society, remarked that every person and every community has its own memories and history, and that understanding the present is impossible without knowing them. He explained that the exhibition presents an era that brought immense suffering and fear to the Hungarian people. “The exhibition introduces us to the well-known and lesser-known heroes of the Revolution: those who risked their lives and took part in rescuing the wounded during our struggle for freedom. It also tells the stories of the many people who suffered during the reprisals following the suppression of the War of Independence. For our contemporaries, this exhibition serves as a poignant act of remembrance; for younger generations, it stands as a testament to history,” he emphasised.
