Safety Inspections of Playgrounds Begin in Debrecen
The Municipality of Debrecen places particular emphasis on maintaining and preserving public playgrounds. In accordance with regulations governing the safety of playground equipment, safety inspections of public playgrounds are currently under way across the city. The inspections are being carried out by a designated certification body as part of the periodic checks required every three years. Experts from the appointed organisation are conducting the inspections according to a schedule, with work due to be completed by the end of October.
The Municipality maintains 687 registered pieces of playground equipment across 101 playgrounds within Debrecen’s administrative area. In 2026, a total of HUF 270 million has been invested in playground improvements. The primary purpose of the mandatory periodic inspections prescribed by the regulations is to prevent accidents and formally certify the technical condition of playgrounds.
The independent expert assessment covers the entire playground infrastructure, with particular attention to the following:
- The structural stability and integrity of equipment.
- Wear and tear, corrosion, rot and any potential fractures affecting playground structures.
- The condition of bolted joints, foundations and fastening elements, including checks on their stability, as well as the degree of wear affecting components subject to heavy use, such as chains, bearings, sliding surfaces and ropes.
- Safety zones and impact attenuation, including measurements of the thickness, compaction and standard-compliant extent of impact-absorbing ground surfaces.
If inspectors identify any equipment or structure that does not meet safety requirements, the affected item or area will be cordoned off with warning tape to clearly prevent children from accessing or using it. The Municipality will arrange for qualified professionals to restore and repair any equipment found to be non-compliant.
The inspections and any necessary repairs will take place during the autumn and winter months, while schools are in session. As colder weather tends to reduce the amount of time people spend outdoors and the use of playgrounds, this period provides a suitable opportunity for professionals to carry out the minor and major repairs needed to ensure that the equipment can be used safely.
The Municipality aims to ensure that families can enjoy safe playgrounds and therefore asks residents for their patience and understanding while the inspections and repairs are being carried out.
