Fourteen entries received the Hungarian Natural History Museum in Debrecen

The designer of the new exhibition building of the Hungarian Natural History Museum in Debrecen will be selected through a design competition involving prestigious domestic and international firms.

The Debrecen Infrastructure Development (DIF) Ltd. is responsible for the preparation.

The Municipality of Debrecen announced a two-stage international design competition to design the new exhibition building. The first participation phase ended on October 31, with 30 applications received. Ten companies were invited to submit designs. In addition to the invited applicants, the top four companies in the applicant ranking were also asked to submit designs.

Since then, the submission phase has also ended, and the evaluation of the submitted designs has begun, Mayor and member of the evaluation committee László Papp said to local newspaper.

According to the mayor, all fourteen companies submitted designs.

László Papp believes Debrecen has a huge opportunity to host a museum of national significance. “This is truly a development for the future,” he said.

“I am very hopeful that a design for an iconic building will be selected, providing significant added value to the city’s cultural and scientific life. We strive to create an exhibition space of international significance within the framework of state investment,” he emphasized.

The museum would be built on the site of the old, now unused Loki field on Oláh Gábor Street. According to the mayor, the uniqueness of the location is due to its proximity to the zoo and the natural environment. The mayor believes that if this museum is built, it will move the scientific world and the world of education, and it may also impact the training structure of the University of Debrecen.

In addition to Hungarian companies, internationally renowned architectural firms also participated in the design competition for the Hungarian Natural History Museum.

If the deadline is not extended, the results will be announced on March 28.
