If the city assembly approves it at next week’s meeting, dogs can travel by public transport starting in April.

Beginning on the 1st of April 1st, DKV Debrecen Transport PLC will permit all dogs to ride on its buses, trolleybuses, and trams for free. It is essential to point out that assistance dogs have always been able to travel free of charge on DKV PLC.

At the announcement, Mayor László Papp said that one of the most important measures of last year was to provide free travel for students under 14 years of age in Debrecen. Now, they are trying to help dog owners. Edina Szilágyi, the Municipality’s animal protection officer, encouraged animal welfare activists and animal lovers to contact them with similar ideas and try to implement them.

DKV CEO Szabolcs Tóth said that they made this proposal to the assembly because their goal is to enable more owners and dogs to enjoy the benefits of public transport and thus contribute to making the city more liveable.

To ensure the safety of passengers and animals, some old regulations will remain in force in addition to the free fare. Dog owners must have a dog vaccination certificate with them every time they use public transport vehicles. Dogs must wear a muzzle and leash on the vehicles. Small dogs are exempt from this, but in this case, they must only be transported in a closed box or bag from which the animal cannot escape. DKV draws attention to the fact that a dog owner can only travel with one dog at a time. Passengers transporting dogs are responsible for ensuring that the dogs do not disturb each other or passengers.

Some helpful travel tips for owners:

  • The dog should be accustomed to the vehicles, starting with short trips so that the dog gets used to the noise and the crowd.
  • Dog owners should always have water with them to give their pets water to keep them hydrated.
  • For good behaviour, the dog should get a treat after getting off.
  • In all cases, the dog should have a muzzle and leash so that the owner can ensure the safety of the passengers and avoid inconveniences.

The company hopes the new rules will encourage more dog owners to take advantage of the free travel.
