German Unity Day Celebrated in Debrecen
German Unity Day was celebrated once again this year at the Kölcsey Centre. The annual celebration commemorates the reunification of East and West Germany on 3 October 1990, following the division of the country after the Second World War. This year’s event in Debrecen celebrated German–Hungarian relations, the traditions of German minority communities, the shared cultural heritage of the two countries and their common European identity.
On 10 October, Alexander Schönfelder, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany, and László Papp, Mayor of Debrecen, delivered speeches at the Kölcsey Centre.
Mayor László Papp said that strengthening German–Hungarian economic relations had brought more than new companies and investment to the city. It had also brought people closer together through culture, science and everyday life. “Here in Debrecen, we sometimes say that we have a little piece of Germany of our own. Ultimately, German–Hungarian relations are not sustained by institutions, agreements or economic indicators, but by people. And perhaps that is precisely what has made developments in Debrecen particularly exciting in recent years,” he explained. He added that closer economic ties between Germany and Hungary had brought not only new businesses and investment to Debrecen, but also people. Through school exchange programmes, Hungarian and German young people have the opportunity to meet one another and learn about each other’s countries. “Joint cultural programmes are being organised, and the German language and culture are becoming an increasingly natural part of everyday life in Debrecen. We have our own Oktoberfest, we celebrate German Unity Day together, and we have German cultural events, student exchanges, and university and scientific collaborations,” the mayor said. He concluded by expressing his hope that Debrecen could set an example in this respect, demonstrating how strong economic cooperation can develop into genuine coexistence, community and friendship.
Following the official speeches, the event continued with a historical lecture and cultural performances by German minority communities and art groups.
