Hilton Garden Inn Debrecen City Center opened

The downtown hotel, part of the world-famous Hilton chain, offers 101 rooms.

The four-star Hilton Garden Inn Debrecen City Center is the chain’s first hotel in Hungary. It is located in the heart of the city centre, right next to the Kálvin Square.

At the opening ceremony, Mayor László Papp said “ the new tourism development fits well into the efforts to make Debrecen an economic, educational, research and development and cultural centre of Central Europe“. The mayor added that the new hotel is not only an imposing building in the heart of the city, not only a modern hotel that meets all needs, but also a new community space of the city, which will bring Debrecen to another league through tourism services, opening up new development opportunities for us in the tourism market. He added “in the first quarter, the number of overnight stays rose by 23 percent and the number of tourists visiting the city increased by 17 percent, and the trend is expected to be sustained”.

The 101-room hotel was built to the latest sustainability standards, achieving LEED Gold certification to US standards. This means, among other things, water and energy efficient operation, the representative of the construction company emphasised. “We are particularly proud that Hilton, the world’s leading hotel chain, has chosen us as a partner and that we have jointly achieved our goals. We have created a facility that both meets the highest standards of tourism and faithfully reflects the values of the city “ Managing Director of Tetrecen Ltd., György László emphasised.

Debrecen and its region are performing well in this area, as is the country as a whole. CEO of Kisfaludy 2030 Tourism Development Nonprofit PLC Anikó  Suhajda-Molnár spoke about the rising number of overnight stays and the role of the region. “In the period January to June 2024, domestic accommodation providers recorded more than 17.8 million overnight stays, up nearly 8 percent on the record year of 2023. Debrecen and its region took a significant share of this, as it was the fifth most popular tourist destination in 2023,” she said.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony was also attended by Hilton’s Eastern European Development Director, Malgorzata Morek who thanked the designers and contractors and wished success to all the hotel’s staff. The first guests arrived at the Hilton in the afternoon. The project has created 50 new jobs in the city.
