Housing, Automotive Industry, Subsidies and International Investment Discussed at Portfolio’s Economic Forum in Debrecen

The next phase of economic growth, the impact of major investments and opportunities for businesses were among the key topics discussed at Portfolio’s economic conference in Debrecen. Alongside the property and energy markets, the event focused on the automotive industry, EU funding and financing opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises.

Financing opportunities for SMEs were among the subjects debated at the forum. During a panel discussion, participants noted that the government intends to allocate EUR 1.5 billion in EU funding to improve the competitiveness of the SME sector in the coming period. The support package will include both non-repayable grants and preferential loans. According to experts, investment activity is likely to only accelerate significantly when the economic environment becomes more predictable. “These opportunities will not only benefit the companies that receive direct support but also those that manage to join the value chain connected to this wave of funding drawdowns,” emphasised Zoltán Márton, Managing Director of Creditexpert.

The second session of the forum focused on Debrecen’s economic development and trends in the property market. Participants discussed how major investments are influencing local real estate developments and how the housing market is responding to the city’s economic growth.

The conference also aimed to highlight the sectors and trends that currently have the greatest influence on Hungary’s economy. “Economic stakeholders also recognise that, alongside Budapest, Debrecen is one of Hungary’s major cities with particularly strong investment potential, both in terms of future opportunities and investments already realised. This is why we regard Debrecen as one of the most important regional locations among Hungary’s major cities beyond the capital,” stressed Roxána Pásztor, Sustainability Project Manager at Portfolio Group.

Mayor László Papp stated that Debrecen’s economy has undergone significant transformation in recent years thanks to major international investments. However, one of the city’s most important challenges in the coming period will be preserving its economic diversity. “One of the greatest challenges facing Debrecen today is how this diversified industrial and economic structure, moderate in scale by Hungarian standards, can remain diversified in the future, ensuring that Debrecen does not become a city dependent on a single industry over the coming decades,” he pointed out.

According to the experts, one of the key conditions for maintaining economic competitiveness in the years ahead will be the continued promotion of technological development and innovation.
