In his introductory speech to the event on Wednesday, Chancellor Zoltán Bács emphasised that the institution, with its educational, research and industrial and innovation activities, is not only outstanding in domestic higher education, but also represents a significant performance incentive for businesses in the region.

“The multiplier effect means a kind of multiplying effect. The investment multiplier shows how much income growth the investment made in the economy results in overall. In this regard, the role of the University of Debrecen is unavoidable in the region,” as said on Wednesday at the Eastern Hungary Economic Forum held at the Hotel Divinus. One of the panel discussions of the meeting focused on the development and improvement of Debrecen and the surrounding settlements, unideb.hu reports.

In his introductory speech, Chancellor Zoltán Bács highlighted that the industrial park of the University of Debrecen, similarly to other similar investments surrounding the city, plays an important role in the development of the “cívis” city.

“Last year, the institution spent HUF 49.5 billion with companies in Hajdú-Bihar County, which is 44 percent of the university’s resources delivered to businesses. In addition, UD itself has an extensive company network, which is unique in Hungarian higher education,”  the university leader listed.

He added, “ the University of Debrecen plans to implement research and development worth EUR 150 million within its normal budget without tenders and external support between 2025 and 2030, which clearly shows the economic strength of the institution.”

“Universities have their own economic strength and impact. Various research institutes are already dealing with the economic footprint of higher education institutions, in connection with which it is worth examining not only the universities’ own economic activities, but also the multiplier effect that we can exert on the operability and preparedness of enterprises through training and the production of Hungarian and foreign specialists, since this is the main aspect and main task of universities,” Zoltán Bács emphasised.

At the panel discussion following the presentation, President and CEO of the XANGA group István Herdon, also highlighted the multiplier effect of the University of Debrecen. He highlighted, “Debrecen is lucky to have a university that operates as a development and innovation centre for surrounding companies.”

According to forecasts, within 10 years the centre of gravity of our country’s industrial production will shift to Eastern Hungary, which will result in an increase in the number of employed people and the profitability of private individuals.

Chancellor Zoltán Bács assured those present that the University of Debrecen has been doing everything it can to train a sufficient quantity and quality of labour for the market.
