Indoor “Move, Debrecen” Activities Resume in School Gyms

Following the summer break, the free indoor activities of the Move, Debrecen! programme have resumed in schools. Available across the city, the initiative offers a wide range of physical activities while not only promoting regular exercise but also bringing communities together. Since the programme was launched in October 2021, almost 300,000 attendances have been recorded at its events.

The Move, Debrecen! programme was launched in 2021 in the city’s community centres with the aim of providing residents with free and easily accessible opportunities to exercise. Due to the popularity of the sessions, the programme has continued to expand over the past few years and, with the inclusion of school gyms, is now available in almost every part of Debrecen.

Deputy Mayor Diána Széles said at a press conference held at the DSZC Bethlen Gábor Secondary School that some of the indoor sessions were suspended during the summer because schools were closed, renovation work was under way and the recent period of extreme heat made indoor activities more difficult, while programmes continued to be held at community centres and outdoor venues. Sessions have now resumed at 11 schools, with activities set to restart at a further five schools by September at the latest.

The deputy mayor highlighted that Move, Debrecen! offers a wide range of activities, meaning that everyone can find a session that best suits their age, fitness level and interests. The programme includes, among other things, Zumba, back-strengthening exercises, yoga, body-shaping aerobics, Pilates and the particularly popular dance sessions for older people. Outdoor activities such as heart-friendly walks and the Mozaik Med community running sessions also remain available.

Diána Széles stressed that one of the initiative’s greatest strengths is cooperation. The Debrecen School District Centre and the Debrecen Vocational Training Centre both help provide school venues, allowing the sessions to be held in suitable conditions and well-equipped gyms. From 7 September, the programme is expected to welcome people looking to get active at a total of 25 indoor and five outdoor venues. The outdoor sessions operate subject to weather conditions.

Since Move, Debrecen! was launched in October 2021, thousands of sessions have been organised, with almost 300,000 attendances recorded in total. According to the deputy mayor, the initiative now reaches beyond the city’s residents. People who live in surrounding settlements but work in Debrecen or otherwise have ties to the city also regularly take part.

The deputy mayor also highlighted the programme’s important role in building communities. Over the past few years, friendships have developed and close-knit communities have formed. Diána Széles said that the initiative had come together in Debrecen through collective effort, and that this was also the foundation of its success: “We are Debrecen together.”

The programme organisers encourage everyone to check the current timetable and choose the activity that best suits them and is available at the most convenient location.
