Debrecen International Airport to Receive Multi-Billion Forint Funding

The government will provide the funding needed to operate Debrecen, Sármellék and Pécs-Pogány airports this year. According to government spokesperson Éva Magyar, the three airports will receive a total of HUF 5.5 billion in funding. The government spokesperson said that this year’s budget had originally made no provision for funding for the three airports. As she put it, without the additional funding, the companies operating the airports could become insolvent. The HUF 5.5 billion package now announced will support the operation of the airports in Debrecen, Sármellék and Pécs-Pogány.

In response to the announcement on social media, Mayor László Papp wrote that during the first half of 2026, the local authority had provided funding to support the airport’s operation as a minority shareholder, with the city contributing HUF 453 million and Debrecen Vagyonkezelő Zrt. providing a further HUF 283 million to help keep the airport operating. “Debrecen International Airport is one of the most important pillars of the city’s and the region’s success. As mayor, I consider it a key priority to safeguard the airport’s continued operation and development,” he said.

According to the mayor, the operation of the airport is crucial to Debrecen’s and the region’s tourism and economic strength, as well as to employment. He regards the additional funding announced by the government as a necessary and good decision. “We consistently stand up for Debrecen’s interests. We are working for the development of our city, the security of our jobs and the airport’s long-term future,” László Papp concluded his post.
