Large-Scale Track Renovation Project to Affect Miskolc–Debrecen Railway Line
As announced by MÁV CEO Zsolt Hegyi, maintenance on the Budapest–Pécs main railway line will begin on 26 May, with works taking place between Rétszilas and Dombóvár, expected to last approximately one month. Once the closure is over, journey times on this section will be reduced by around three minutes.
From 27 May, works will begin between Szerencs and Nyíregyháza on the 100C railway line, and will continue throughout the summer. Large-scale bridge maintenance will be carried out between Rakamaz and Tokaj, while previous speed restrictions on the line will be removed and level crossings rebuilt. The chief executive indicated that both railway closures would involve significant traffic restrictions, replacement bus services, transfers, and longer journey times.
He added that they are also seeking to assist passengers with a new solution for travel from Budapest to Pécs, as well as from Miskolc to Debrecen, with direct coach services also operating via the motorway. Passengers planning to travel between Budapest and Pécs, or between Debrecen and Miskolc during this period are advised to check the available travel options.
Zsolt Hegyi explained that “these investments, financed from the company’s own resources, essentially fall within the category of maintenance works.” He added that the purpose of carrying them out is to restore the railway lines to their original condition and to ensure reliable daily operations.
