Mayor László Papp has requested increased police presence around entertainment venues in Debrecen during the summer months
Last weekend, an argument between young people in front of a nightclub on Péterfia Street escalated into a street fight.
Following the incident, Mayor László Papp held discussions with Chief Police Commissioner Zoltán Illés and firmly requested that in the coming months the police pay heightened attention to all nightlife areas and maintain a strong public presence — especially around the entertainment venues on Péterfia Street, Piac Street, and Petőfi Square.
Last weekend’s altercation on Péterfia Street — which escalated into a street fight — understandably caused public outrage after recordings of the incident appeared online.
Those responsible for such acts must expect police proceedings. An investigation has been launched, although interestingly, the operator of the venue did not report the incident; the investigation began based on footage posted on social media.
Because of the incident, Mayor Papp held discussions with Chief Commissioner Illés and strongly requested increased police attention and presence around all entertainment venues in the coming months, with particular focus on Péterfia Street, Piac Street, and Petőfi Square.
Recreation and nightlife are important and necessary — they are key elements of a livable city — but they must not lead to fights or disturbances, either inside or outside entertainment venues. We all share the interest that going out should truly be about enjoyment and relaxation, not about conflict.
