Main Railway Station Reconstruction and Other Developments in Debrecen to Move into Preparatory Phase

Published on Friday, a government decree amendment covers the new Debrecen Main Railway Station as well as a number of urban and regional railway developments. Zsolt Tárkányi, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Ministry of Transport and Investment, summarised the local aspects of the amendment on his social media page. He writes that the preparation of a number of projects has also been included among the developments eligible for funding under the current EU funding cycle. These are projects that the Government has already approved specifically at the request of the Tisza Party representatives elected in April.

One of the most significant of these projects is the reconstruction of the Main Railway Station, which will not only serve as a railway station but will also become the new home of the long-distance bus station. In addition, preparations will be made for several tram-train, or rail-tram, services linking Debrecen with the surrounding railway lines, integrated into Tram Line 1. The renovation of the tram line, a partial rethink of the stop layout, making the service more passenger-friendly and improving accessibility are also long overdue.

According to Tárkányi’s post, EU funding may also be made available under the amended decree for the preparation of the following developments in Debrecen and the wider region:
– Electrification and track renovation on the Debrecen-Apafa–Mátészalka railway line.
– Track reconstruction between Püspökladány and Debrecen, together with the installation of ETCS signalling on the Szajol–Debrecen section. The aim is to introduce speeds of up to 160 km/h.
– Complete renovation of the Debrecen–Nyíregyháza line and the introduction of speeds of up to 160 km/h.
– The full cost of the soon-to-be-completed track renovation and electrification of the Debrecen–Balmazújváros line, amounting to HUF 38 billion, to be paid from the Recovery Fund.

In addition, almost one hundred similar projects across the country, along with the purchase of new multiple-unit trains and the renovation of tracks, stations and stops, may also receive funding, Zsolt Tárkányi writes.
