Mayor of Debrecen to File Criminal Complaint Against Semcorp
Due to repeated instances of environmental pollution exceeding legal limits, Mayor László Papp is calling on the environmental authority to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the matter and examine Semcorp’s responsibility. “We have received information from the environmental authority that environmental contamination has occurred at the Semcorp site, with levels of pollution in groundwater exceeding the permitted limits,” he said in a video statement published on his social media page on Wednesday concerning Semcorp’s operations in Debrecen.
The Mayor described the situation as unacceptable and recalled that this was not the first time suspicions or instances of breaches of environmental regulations had arisen in connection with Semcorp. “For this reason, we are calling in the strongest possible terms on the environmental authority to carry out a comprehensive investigation into this matter, to examine Semcorp’s responsibility, to suspend the company’s manufacturing activities if necessary, and to consider the possibility of revoking its environmental operating permit. Furthermore, we will not stop at requesting the expansion of official investigations; we will also file a criminal complaint in this case, given that violations of environmental regulations may also have criminal law consequences, and these must be fully investigated. Anyone who disregards Debrecen’s environmental regulations must also face the corresponding criminal consequences,” the statement concludes.
Should the company respond to press inquiries, this article will be updated accordingly.
