1st Bolyai Dodgeball Cup Held as Part of “Move, Debrecen!” School Programme

Adrenaline once again took centre stage at the Dodgeball Cup organised by Bolyai János Primary School. Within the “Move, Debrecen!” school programme, this ball game is the most popular sporting activity among children. The city-wide championship in February was also a great success, and as the academic year drew to a close, the winning school organised a dodgeball cup, thereby bringing this year’s programme of school sports events to an end.

The children eagerly awaited the matches. The event was organised by Bolyai János Primary School, which had won the citywide amateur dodgeball championship in February at the Főnix Arena. This time, pupils in Years 5 and 6 from five educational institutions took part in the first Bolyai Dodgeball Cup, which the school established with the intention of creating a tradition.

“In February, both girls and boys asked whether dodgeball would end for the year. At that point, I decided that it should not come to an end; instead, we would continue preparing and organise a competition towards the end of the year, specifically for the best teams. The top three teams from the city championship were present here today,” said Tamás Vasziliu, teacher and leisure organiser.

According to Deputy Mayor Diána Széles, one of the key objectives of the “Move, Debrecen!” school programme is to respond to the needs of children. Experience shows that team sports engage the largest number of pupils. “In numerous programmes, children have shown us directions, and for us as a city, the ‘Move, Debrecen!’ initiative provides an opportunity to implement these ideas; in practice, we are merely the executors. The children design the programme, and we bring it to life for them,” she emphasised.

The Bolyai Dodgeball Cup was the final school sports event of the academic year within the programme.
