Road Construction and Large-Scale Road Resurfacing Works Continue in Debrecen
Details were presented at a press conference by Mayor László Papp and city councillor István Kovács at one of the sites – Seregély Street in Haláp – on 7 May 2026.
As László Papp explained, the city’s development cannot stop, and this is clearly visible in the transport developments taking place across Debrecen, as works are under way in every part of the city, including Haláp. Work has recently been completed at eight locations, is currently ongoing at 12 locations, and in the case of several streets, developments are either in the preparation phase or the related public procurement procedures are under way. As the Mayor emphasised, in the coming weeks the local authority will commission planning work for several streets, while the related public procurement procedures will also begin. The reconstruction of several major junctions is currently in progress. Among these, the redevelopment of the junction of Csigekert Street, Szabó Lőrinc Street, Füredi Road and Balmazújvárosi Road is nearing completion. In the second half of May, this junction will be reopened to cross traffic, once again serving residents of Akadémiakert and the Liget residential park. Works are also ongoing at the junction of Hétvezér Street and Vámospércsi Road. It is hoped that work there will be completed in the second half of the summer. Another highly important development is the construction of the road and grade-separated junction linking Main Road 354 with Main Road 33 via Domokos Márton Road. This route will be of outstanding importance in offering motorists an alternative route and helping to ease the traffic currently flowing from Józsa towards Böszörményi Road. In connection with the unavoidable inconvenience caused by the roadworks, László Papp thanked drivers for their patience and stressed that all of these developments are intended to make travel in Debrecen easier and safer in the future than it is at present.
City councillor István Kovács spoke about the fact that construction work on Seregély Street in Haláp began in 2024. At that time, the section between Fecske Street and Csíz Street was renovated over a length of 100 metres and a width of 5.5 metres, while a stormwater infiltration ditch was also created alongside the road construction works, and the pavement was renewed as well. The second phase of the road construction project is currently under way, under which a further 118 metres of Seregély Street will receive a road surface. As in the first phase, a stormwater infiltration ditch will also be created, while pavements will be renewed and constructed. All of this is being carried out using HUF 53 million entirely from municipal funds. Residents of Haláp had long awaited this investment, as it is an important route providing access, for example, to the doctor’s surgery and the prayer house. István Kovács also mentioned that further developments – including large-scale road resurfacing and road and pavement construction – are expected later this year in the district he represents.
Mayor László Papp added that, in István Kovács’s district, road construction investments worth more than HUF 440 million have taken place at nine locations between 2019 and the present day, covering both smaller and considerably longer road sections. This figure also clearly demonstrates that the eastern part of the city is receiving significant funding so that, through the use of resources generated by the city, the local authority can provide residents with a far better quality of life than before.
